Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice)

1 cup apples, peeled and diced (preferably Granny Smith)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

1 egg, for egg wash

Additional sugar for sprinkling on top

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.

Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture is crumbly and resembles coarse crumbs.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk with the diced apples and nuts (if using).

Form Dough: Add the buttermilk mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix the dough.

Shape the Scones: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it a couple of times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut it into 8 wedges like a pie.

Prepare for Baking: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle a little sugar over each scone for added sweetness and crunch.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Allow the scones to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm, optionally drizzled with a simple glaze or with butter.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes | Servings: 8 scones
