Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup brown sugar, packed

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

¼ cup vegetable oil

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup buttermilk

2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced (preferably Granny Smith)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and softened butter until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Add in the vegetable oil and mix until combined. Then, add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start with the dry ingredients and end with them, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Gently fold in the diced apples, ground cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using). Ensure the apple pieces are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Optionally, dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar before serving. Cut into squares and enjoy this rich and flavorful Cocoa Apple Cake!
