Crispy Air Fryer Tofu Nuggets

1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed and drained

1 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ cup plant-based milk (such as almond or soy)

¾ cup panko breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (optional)

Cooking spray or a drizzle of olive oil

Dipping sauce of your choice (sweet chili, BBQ, or spicy mayo)

Instructions
 

Prepare the Tofu: Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes, about 1-inch thick. This allows for maximum surface area to get crispy.

    Make the Coating: In a medium bowl, combine cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until combined.

      Set Up Dipping Stations: In separate bowls, place the plant-based milk and panko breadcrumbs (mixed with nutritional yeast if using). You will dip the tofu in the cornstarch mixture, then the milk, and finally coat it with panko.

        Coat the Tofu: Start with a tofu piece, roll it in the cornstarch mixture first, then dip it into the plant-based milk, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, coat it with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere. Place the coated nugget on a plate and repeat with the remaining tofu.

          Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.

            Arrange in Air Fryer: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or drizzle a little olive oil to prevent sticking. Arrange the tofu nuggets in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they aren’t overcrowded. You may need to do this in batches.

              Air Fry the Nuggets: Cook the tofu nuggets for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy. For an extra crisp, spray lightly with cooking spray midway.

                Serve: Remove the crispy nuggets from the air fryer and let them cool slightly. Serve with your choice of dipping sauce for an added flavor punch.
