Ingredients

12 oz ziti pasta

1 lb ground beef (or Italian sausage for extra flavor)

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

1 can (15 oz) ricotta cheese

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 egg

1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook until al dente, according to package instructions (typically about 7-8 minutes). Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté the diced onion until translucent (about 3-4 minutes). Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Add the ground beef (or sausage) to the skillet, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 6-8 minutes. Stir in the marinara sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.

Mix the Cheese Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.

Combine Ingredients: In a large baking dish, layer half of the cooked ziti pasta on the bottom. Pour half of the meat sauce over the ziti. Spread half of the cheese mixture over the sauce. Repeat the layers with the remaining ziti, meat sauce, and cheese mixture.

Top with Cheese: Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese on top of the final layer.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, let the dish cool for 5-10 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving. Enjoy your life-changing baked ziti!
