Ingredients

1 lb ground beef or turkey

1 cup breadcrumbs (Italian seasoned preferred)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

2 cups marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup ricotta cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare Meatballs: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef or turkey, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, then form into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet.

Bake Meatballs: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until they are browned and cooked through.

Prepare Casserole Dish: While the meatballs are baking, spread 1 cup of marinara sauce evenly in the bottom of a 9x13 inch casserole dish.

Build Layers: Once the meatballs are done, carefully place them over the marinara sauce in the casserole dish. Add the ricotta cheese by spooning dollops over the meatballs, then pour the remaining marinara sauce over them as well.

Add Cheese: Finally, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the top of the casserole.

Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole in the oven and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
