Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20)

1/2 cup finely chopped onion

1/3 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

1 large egg

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)

1 cup sliced mushrooms (button or cremini)

2 cups beef broth

2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional for thickening)

1/4 cup heavy cream (optional for creaminess)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, seasoned breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Form Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into oval patties about 1 inch thick.

Sear the Patties: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until a nice brown crust forms. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

Sauté the Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and sauté for about 5 minutes until they are golden and tender. Stir often to ensure even cooking.

Create the Gravy: Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer. Add cornstarch mixed with a bit of cold water (if using) to thicken the gravy. Stir frequently until the sauce thickens slightly.

Return Patties to the Skillet: Carefully place the seared Salisbury steaks back into the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. If desired, add heavy cream for a richer flavor. Simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the patties to heat through and absorb some of the gravy flavor.

Serve: Once the patties are cooked through, garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve them hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or with a side of vegetables to soak up the delicious gravy.
