Ingredients

1 lb (450g) ground beef (preferably sirloin or chuck)

2 cups fresh Thai basil leaves, packed

4 cloves garlic, minced

2-3 Thai bird’s eye chilies, finely chopped (adjust to taste)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 bell pepper (red or green), thinly sliced

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

3 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon oyster sauce

1 tablespoon fish sauce

1 tablespoon sugar (brown sugar for depth)

1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water

Cooked jasmine rice or rice noodles, for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sugar. Mix well until the sugar dissolves. Set aside.

Stir Fry Aromatics: In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the minced garlic and chopped bird’s eye chilies. Stir Fry for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.

Cook the Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until it’s browned all over, about 4-5 minutes.

Add Vegetables: Stir in the sliced onion and bell pepper. Sauté for another 2-3 minutes or until they start to soften.

Combine with Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the beef mixture and stir. Let it cook for 1-2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Thicken the Sauce: Add the cornstarch slurry to the skillet and stir well. Allow the sauce to thicken for about 1 minute.

Add the Basil: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the fresh Thai basil leaves until they wilt and become fragrant.

Serve: Spoon the spicy Thai basil beef stir fry over bowls of jasmine rice or rice noodles. Garnish with extra basil leaves and a slice of lime if desired.
